But the team from the eight tier of rugby league were dreaming of a shock when they went into an early 8-0 lead with tries from Jordan Gibspn and Dean Dollin.
On a quagmire of a pitch, Oldham recovered their compure to lead 20-8 at the break through tries from Richard Lepori, Michael Ward, George Tyson and Danny Grimshaw with Leatherbarrow landing two conversions.
Lepori added an early second-half try to quash any hopes of a comeback for the visitors and other tries came from Joe Burke, Kiran Gill and Adam Clay, Leatherbarrow only landing one more kick as the conditions worsened.
Haydock battled to the end and were cheered when Steve Jones scored a consolation try right at the end and they received a deserved ovation for their efforts.
