Roughyeds head back to Mayfield

MAYFIELD Sports Centre in Castleton, Rochdale, should be confirmed as the Roughyeds’ temporary base for Sunday’s ‘home’ Northern Rail Cup tie against Hornets RL.
The club hopes to tie up the deal by lunchtime to play out the derby clash at the same venue that staged the Law Cup clash between the same teams last week.
The move is necessary because the club are not yet able to use their proposed new home in the borough.
Roughyeds officials asked the RFL to postpone the fixture as a result of this but the request was turned down by the governing body, who now need to be satisfied as to a couple of ground safety matters before the Mayfield fixture can be confirmed.
“We’ve a couple of boxes to tick on matters such as stewarding but, hopefully, everything will be tied up by lunchtime today,” said Roughyeds chairman Chris Hamilton.
“We are not in a position we wanted to be in, but we are getting on with it.
“This is an important game and we hope fans will turn up in numbers and show their support for the club.
“Over the course of the next few days we feel sure supporters will take the view that all this has been well worth while.”
The club hopes to be in a position to play at a new permanent home within the borough — believed to be the Whitebank Stadium in Limeside — by the time Sheffield Eagles are due to travel to face the Roughyeds on Sunday, February 21.
From lunchtime today, fans can call the Roughyeds office on (0161) 6283677 for information on this Sunday’s match.
Season ticket holders who have yet to collect tickets can do so from the club offices on Lansdowne Road, Chadderton, up to 5pm on Friday or before the game on Sunday.
More specific information for fans will be issued once the venue is confirmed.
Season ticket holders have so far paid for standing only but as a gesture of goodwill from the club they will be guaranteed a seat on Sunday, free of charge, up until 2.45pm.
The club points out that there will be seats available for non-season ticket holders as well.

Good comment martin29,however The Roughyeds have staggered from one chrisis to the other and it all seems to relate to cash flow or lack of it and a business plan that is Monotheistic in its management, and so far a tad haphazardous...A refurbished Boundary Park seems to me to be absolutely ideal, good location and road links,My view is BP measures the current scenario re On pitch performance. Both sides are in a bit of a downward trend currently.Ford stand rebuilt and The Latics still AOK IMHO
I agree with Martin29 but have you considered that they may not be able to pay a reasonable rent for the use of Boundary Park. I see only 600-700 fans there at games and it wont surprise me if they cant afford it.
ref am i missing something:- i could not agree more you would have thought the extra money from a ground share would appeal to the money grubers who run the latics and it dosent look like penneys judgement is up to much considering how they are playing now that the rugby club isnt desecrating thier hallowed turf
ref marvin rugby couldnt pay there way latics are not a charity rugby dont like paying there way hence being in present situation they used a semi pro side pitch used all facilitys and never offered a penny towards the running cost just damaged the pitch typical ch
paying the rent at bp isnt the issue penny expressed the opinion to the owners that his team would play better is they were the only ones using the pitch.read the results since they have had it to themselves time the penney was dropped
The last comment is the nub of the problem, ORLFC skint, currently in chrisis. Not a really appealing prospect, could be a liability initially! However in an ideal world one could hope that the generousity of spirit of the People of Oldham and their Council and the Latics management would help ORLFC anyway for God knows we need it, You dont kick a dog when its down and even the dogs will eat up the crumbs under the rich "amigos" table. It may only be needed for a short period as well!

Am I missing something? As someone who views from afar, but can remember the crowds and the glory at 'Sheddings and BP in the 60's and 70's, it seems Chris Hamilton and Tony Benson are doing all they can. Penney's selfish objections aside what is wrong with a fully thought out ground share just like Hull, Huddersfield,Wigan Swansea,Watford, Notts County etc? Modern pitch technology makes the old arguments invalid and if both clubs are to survive then surely some joined up thinking is required.
