Oldham confirm cup-tie venue

OLDHAM Roughyeds will be back at Sedgley Park for their Carnegie Challenge Cup third round tie against Blackwood Bulldogs, the club have confirmed.
The ‘home’ game against the Welsh amateur outfit will take place on Sunday, (3pm kick-off) at the same Whitefield venue that the Oldham club have used twice already this season, as officials continue in their efforts to finally secure the Whitebank Stadium in Limeside as a permanent base.
Yesterday’s game against Swinton Lions, the opener of the new Co-operative Championship One season, was also at Sedgley Park but was designated as an ‘away’ game.
It was won 38-20 and in highly impressive fashion by the Roughyeds, whose next league match pits them against another well-fancied team in Hunslet Hawks at home in two weeks’ time.
Before then, though, Wayne Kerr will face an RFL disciplinary hearing after being dismissed in the final minute against the Lions.
The big Irish prop got involved in a fight with Swinton’s Ian Watson and both men were given red cards by referee Craig Halloran.
The governing body will now examine video footage before deciding whether anyone else will be hauled in front of them a week tomorrow, with the brawl spreading in pockets right across the field.
Roughyeds coach Tony Benson reported no serious injury worries following the Swinton game.
The outstanding Mick Fogerty picked up a cut on his head but had it strapped up and was able to play on, while Valu Bentley (hamstring) came through a late fitness test and took to the field at loose forward without any problems.
Comments
Will drama ever post a positive comment?
Agree. Its very easy criticising from the other side of the world....
Hello Mark H. At least I post, even though I live in Singapore I still have an interest in what goes on at BP and wherever Roughyeds might play. It's more than can be said for many Oldhamers who,it seems, have lost interest judging by the lack of posts about Roughyeds - and you won't find many positive posts about Latics (check the comments for yourself). I am actually making comments (a) based on reports I read (b) fans I am in regular contact with and (c) FACTS!!!!!!. Fair enough?
By the way - where was the moan in my intial posting? I asked a question. Simply a question!
By the way I have a Latics scarf across the dash of my car here in Singapore AND I am awaiting delivery of a Roughyeds shirt to wear amongst the masses of Aussie/USA and EPL garb that can be seen all over the Island.
Moan? No, simply still want to show my concern about the sporting problems faced over there in the town.
Okay Londn Boy/MarkH?
London Boy and Mark H - just seen the on-line Chron' over here (9-15pm that's 1.15pm in the UK) and see there's a 'hiccup' (to say the least) over the planned move to Whitebank Stadium. I can't profess to be able to 'foretell the future' but I did pose the question yesterday whether the move would materilaise. We shall (all) have to wait and see.
drama, I've posted my views on that story, the NIMBYs are always first to voice their opinion. They even objected a few years ago when the (then) Oldham Town wanted to improve the facilities, in fact I think they used to same excuses as they are doing now.
As for the lack of support regarding the Roughyeds, years of struggle in the 3rd tier of rugby league, and no home ground has hit the support hard. Couple that with the recession and something has to give.
Personally, I've always preferred football over rugby, but have still attended a few games over the years. Sadly finances dictate what I do in my leisure time these days, and as I have to choose then I choose football.
As for the positive Latics posts, I do try, but unfortunately they get swamped by the negative posts. That's just the way it goes.
I think we both want the same things, Oldham to at least have a stable sporting environment. It just may take some time.
Cheers MarkH, well put. Let's hope something positive does come out of the present embarrassing situations that both clubs find themselves in.

Will Whitebank Stadium be yet another venue that fails to materialise?
