Miles of dedication!

Two-try hero of Oldham’s 25-24 win over London Skolars Miles Greenwood defied a painful back complaint and concern for his pregnant wife Joanne to turn in a man-of-the-match performance at Whitebank.

The former Halifax full-back insisted on playing, even though coach Tony Benson was prepared to pull him out minutes before kick off.

Benson said: “Miles woke up with pain in his back. We decided to let him take part in the warm-up.

“Miles was keen to play so we took the decision to leave the team as it was, and he had a blinder.”

The Oldham-born player, in his first season with his home-town club, said adrenaline took over once he started to play and it got him through the game.

He added: “Joanne was due to give birth on Friday, but didn’t and insisted she was coming to the game: that’s support for you!

“We showed a lot of character. It was good to get a win at last. We can build on it now.”

Club captain Neil Roden dropped a last-minute goal to win the game.

He said: “Our commitment as a group of players was underlined by Miles. In the warm-up he couldn’t run as fast as me — and that’s saying something — but he had a great game and his two tries were key to our win.

Of his winning drop goal, he said: “I just took aim and let fly. It’s a long time since I last kicked one, but it was good to know I could still do it.”
