Roughyeds romp home in Neath

South Wales 12 Oldham 44
OLDHAM consolidated their position in the Championship One play-offs by comfortably seeing off South Wales to make it back-to-back victories.

And the manner of this win, gained thanks to eight tries from the visitors at Neath, will help give the team the lift it needs ahead of the trip to Barrow in two weeks' time.

Tony Benson's men fielded an experienced side and in comparison, the Scorpions had been hit by a run of injuries in the latter half of the week.

The Roughyeds eased to the win without getting out of second gear and it only took three minutes for their first score when David Cookson finished off a good first set of six by diving home. Jamie Dallimore missed the kick.

Neil Roden set up Paul Smith to go over for the second try from short range and the outstanding Dallimore converted for a 10-point lead in as many minutes.

South Wales were handed a great chance to score when a combination of errors in the Oldham backline gave Kevin James the ball. But despite having a set of six to go 20 metres, he too fumbled.

Minutes later, Steve Parry sprinted 50 metres then won a penalty for an infringement at the play-the-ball. But from the next tackle, South Wales dropped the ball and the visitors were saved again.

Finally, after winning another penalty, Shaun Owens created a gap for Alan Pope to go over and Owens converted.

South Wales were their own worst enemies — but Oldham didn’t quite have enough gas in the tank to make it 50.
