We can win league, say Spencer

Oldham RL's new second in command Lee Spencer believes the club will win the Cooperative Championship One title next season.

"Spanner", as he is known in the game, was unveiled as Scott Naylor's assistant at a media conference at Whitebank.

The 50 year old has been on the coaching staff at Salford City Reds for nine years - three of them alongside Naylor.

And in piecing together a youthful, new-look squad, Spencer believes Oldham is already on the right path to haul itself out of the bottom tier

"I am quietly confident. We have an advantage with the players we have signed and those who are already here who boast vast experience.

"We are very confident the lads are enthusiastic and want to play for Oldham. Most of them are youngsters and want to get back to Super League.

"If we win the league this year, everyone will be knocking on the door for our young players, won't they? That's what we are looking for."

Being used to a Super League mindset, Spencer isn't prepared to let things slide at his new club.

"I don't want to be disrespectful to Oldham, but we have come from Super League. We have picked up good habits. We want to instil personal pride in the players' individual performances.

"They are eager to play and go the extra mile. We don't want people who will cut corners."
