Youths set for run-out

THE latest crop of youngsters on Oldham RL Club's production line will be unveiled at Whitebank tomorrow night.

Only nine of the 23 clubs in the two divisions beneath Super League will invest in under-20s teams in the coming season - and Roughyeds is proud to be one of them.

Despite significant cuts in RFL funding, Oldham felt it was important to stick to its principles on youth development. Of the nine, only four are in Championship One — Oldham, Rochdale Hornets, South Wales Scorpions and newcomers Hemel Stags.

"Our commitment to developing our own players has been successful over the years, and we intend to

continue on that road," said Roughyeds chairman Chris Hamilton.

"Our fans have always backed us on this and we trust they will again get behind our youngsters this season, particularly when they play at Whitebank starting tomorrow."

Admission to the eight home games in the Merit Table will be free to season-ticket holders, but tomorrow night's pre-season warm-up against York (8pm) is all pay; £4 for adults, £2 concessions.

Oxford boss Tony Benson has signed 31-year-old winger Lucas Onyango — his ninth recruit from last year's Oldham squad when he was in charge.
