Naylor: Whitty gives us options

DANNY Whitmore’s ability to play equally well at half-back and hooker was a key factor in Scott Naylor’s relentless pursuit of the former Waterhead junior.

The seventh player to sign a 2014 Roughyeds’ contract, 24-year-old Whitmore has rejected other offers in preferring to return to his home-town club from Batley Bulldogs.

He has been on Naylor’s wanted list since the Oldham boss first arrived at Whitebank last November.

He broke an arm when Naylor got him on loan in mid-season, but even that didn’t weaken the boss’s determination to sign him permanently as soon as possible.

Naylor said: “Danny can play two key roles and that gives us options. Having somebody like Whitty at the club makes us stronger all round.

“He’ll listen and learn, he’s got a terrific attitude and he’s a perfect fit to go into the sort of squad we’re building for next year.

“I’m delighted that one of his reasons for wanting to come back was his wish to work for Lee Spencer and me. That’s another plus.”




BY the end of November, Oldham Roughyeds' Supporters' Association (ORSA) will have raised nearly £6,000 for the club in 12 months.



ORSA chairman Nigel Marland said: “Our handful of active members sweat blood for the club. They should be hugely proud of their hard work.”

Autumn fund-raisers for the association include whisky tasting at the Lyceum tomorrow night, a quiz night at the same venue on Thursday, November 7 and a race night organised jointly with Higginshaw amateur rugby league club on Friday, November 15 in their club.
