They did the right things in the right areas — Naylor

DEFENSIVE clangers by the backs proved costly and were the root cause of Oldham’s failure to retain their unbeaten league record at Hunslet, said coach Scott Naylor.

It all went wrong for Roughyeds in the second half, when Hawks got on top to score five tries to one - three of them in the last 15 minutes to deny the visitors a bonus point.

Naylor said: “For most of the first half we stuck to playing as planned and to utilising the things we had worked on in preparing for the game.

“We spoke at half-time about what we needed to do in order to kick-on, but the opposite happened and our backs made far too many mistakes.

“Give a good team like Hunslet as much field position as we did and they will inevitably score points — it’s as simple as that. They deserved to win because they were more clinical than us; they did the right things in the right areas.”
