Palfrey praise for Oldham’s try machines

OLDHAM have the two top wingers in Championship One – and on the number of tries they have scored that’s irrefutable.

Only Oxford full back Sean Morris and Gateshead forward Jason Payne have scored more tries this season than Roughyeds’ finishers Mo Agoro and Dale Bloomfield, who are each on 12.

York winger Ben Dent is one behind on 11, but there isn’t another club in the division with one winger on 12, let alone two.

“Both are in great form and deserve all the accolades they get, but their success is also a reflection of the style of rugby we are playing,” said Oldham captain Lewis Palfrey.

“We are getting the ball out to the wings and they are making the most of the opportunities. In a friendly sort of way they are also competing with each other.”

By averaging a try per game each, they have scored more in total – 24 – than the rest of the backs put together.

Agoro, on the right flank, began the season quietly but is now in stunning form, with eight tries in Oldham’s last four games.

Top tries: Morris (Oxford) 13, Payne (Gateshead) 13, Bloomfield (OLDHAM) 12, Agoro (OLDHAM) 12, Dent (York) 11, Lee (York) 11.

Oldham leaders (all matches): Agoro 13, Bloomfield 12, Crowley 8, Ford 6, Hughes 5, Langtree 5, Nield 5, Ward 4, Cookson 3, Wood 3.

Palfrey, meanwhile, has taken a clear lead at the top of Championship One goals and points listings.

“I don’t score many tries (two so far), so I’ll have to rely on goals to keep myself up there in the points rankings.”

Top goals: Palfrey (OLDHAM) 40, Bradley (Gloucester) 36, Hardcastle (York) 34, Swindells (Hemel) 28, Emanuelli (South Wales) 27.

Top points: Palfrey (OLDHAM) 88, Bradley (Gloucester) 77, Hardcastle (York) 76, Swindells (Hemel) 76, Ballard (Hunslet) 68.
