Relief for Oldham in build-up to Skolars trip

GOOD news for Oldham RL Club . . . forwards Michael Ward and George Tyson won’t face disciplinary charges after getting themselves into hot water with referee Warren Turley in the 24-23 win against Hunslet Hawks.

Ward (pictured, inset) was penalised and placed on report for tackling off the ball early in the second half.

Tyson was sent to the sin bin for striking an opponent in the 66th minute.

Hunslet’s Michael Haley went with him before play was restarted with a penalty to Oldham — an indication that match officials considered Roughyeds to be the aggrieved party.

Having studied the incidents on DVD and considered the referee’s report, the Match Review Panel concluded that all three players had already been punished sufficiently.

In Ward’s case, the panel said he did tackle an opponent without the ball, but he didn’t use his shoulder or make contact with the opponent’s head.

Tyson and Haley, the panel concluded, were involved in a confrontation, after Haley ‘pushed out’ in the tackle.

Centre David Cookson (dislocated wrist) is out of Sunday’s trip to Enfield to take on London Skolars (3pm kick-off).

On-loan prop Nathan Mason, who has been out for a few weeks with a stomach muscle injury, has made a complete recovery. He trained normally last night and will be in contention for an immediate recall to the 17.

There is good news, too, of Kenny Hughes (ankle) and Dale Bloomfield (dead leg). They will be further assessed at training tomorrow, but hopes are rising that they might make it.

Several players failed to make last night’s session because they were stuck in traffic after a major incident on the M60.
