Surgery for Palfrey

Captain of Oldham RL Club Lewis Palfrey will need surgery to repair a hernia that troubled him for much of last season.

Palfrey was due to see a specialist today for a date for the procedure, which he hopes will be before Christmas.

“I wanted to avoid surgery, but the specialist has told me it’s going to be the keyhole variety, with a recovery time of seven to 14 days,” said Palfrey. “That’s good news. I’m keen to get it done before Christmas and I’ve told hospital staff I’ll go in on Christmas Eve if I have to.”

Half-back Palfrey said pre-season training was tougher, more demanding and more intense than last year: “We’ve brought in more good people, who will significantly improve the squad.

“Jarrod Ward has really impressed me in training. He’s a carbon copy of Richard Lepori and we all know what a good player he is.”

Lepori, ‘Lippy’ was the Roughyeds’ star full-back in 2013 before he left for Australia. He has returned to sign for Steve Deakin’s Whitehaven for next season.
