Ashton ‘choked’ at injury jolt

NEW and exciting signing Tom Ashton is out of Sunday’s League One game against London Skolars at Whitebank (3pm kick-off).

The former Sheffield Eagles man made a try-scoring debut for Roughyeds in their 38-10 home win against Coventry Bears. He kept his place for last Sunday’s trip to South Wales and had a storming first half before damaging his left knee before the break.

“He’ll see a specialist on Friday,” said Naylor. “Hopefully he’ll have a scan, so we should know more by next week. Everyone else in the squad is fit and available for selection.”

Naylor will have options for the vacant centre spot, but an obvious move would be to recall Adam Clay on the wing and switch Jon Ford from wing to the centre.

A bitterly disappointed Ashton said: “I’m choked about this because I felt I was going well, especially as the Coventry game was my first for five or six months.

“I was blowing a bit near the end, but other than that I felt fine — and I felt even better until I was injured on Sunday.”

George Tyson, his co-centre against South Wales, will face no further action after being sin-binned for a late challenge on Jamie Dallimore in the 18-16 iPro Sport Cup semi-final defeat by North Wales Crusaders.

The RFL has ruled 10 minutes in the bin was sufficient punishment.
