Oldham eyes on Eagles

HAVING seen off Dewsbury Rams and Batley Bulldogs at Bower Fold, Oldham will be gunning for the scalp of a third Yorkshire club when Sheffield Eagles visit Bower Fold on Sunday (3pm kick-off).

An added attraction will be the anticipated appearance for Eagles of former Roughyeds favourites Adam Neal and George Tyson. They were key members of the Roughyeds’ promotion-winning side last season, Season over, they went full time with Eagles where they have continued to impress.

After four defeats in a row — and a public apology to fans from coach Mark Aston — Eagles bounced back to form with a highly-noteworthy 46-28 win at Bradford Bulls.

Tyson scored one of their eight tries in a much-changed side caused by Aston’s decision to leave out captain Mitch Stringer, Michael Knowles and Rob Worrincy, while questioning their attitudes.

Aston later told League Express: “Nobody is guaranteed a spot. I wanted players to be inspirational and I thought they were.”

It remains to be seen whether the Eagles boss will reinstate three of his most experienced players ahead of the Oldham game, or stick with the side that did him proud at Bradford.

Roughyeds coach Scott Naylor and his medical team, meanwhile, will assess several players at training tonight, most of whom didn’t play in the gripping 28-12 win against Batley. They include Danny Grimshaw, Danny Langtree, Jon Ford, Jack Holmes and Adam Files
