Aiming to finish on high

FROM top to bottom, everyone at Oldham Rugby League Club will be working round the clock to see Roughyeds finish the season as high up the Championship table as possible.

That's the pledge from chairman Chris Hamilton (left) in the aftermath of Sunday's 30-16 win against drop rivals Workington Town which took Roughyeds five points clear of the drop zone and lifted them above Swinton Lions into fifth place in the eight-club Kingstone Press Championship Shield.

While they could still go down mathematically, with six games left, they could instead catch Dewsbury Rams or Sheffield Eagles in the quest to qualify for the top-four play-offs.

The win against Workington, which produced a new fans' favourite in two-try debutant full-back Scott Turner, followed a 23-12 defeat at Derwent Park in March and a 32-30 loss to Town at Bower Fold a fortnight ago.

"Psychologically, we jumped another hurdle on Sunday," said Hamilton. "To overtake us, either Workington or Whitehaven would have to win three more games than us with only six to play. That's a big ask.

"We owe Swinton Lions one and we need to go there on Sunday and play a lot better than we did last time.

"Whatever happens, though, there will be no relaxing and no let-up in our intensity; that applies to me and to everyone else at the club."
