JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE

LIAM Aspin’s moment of magic for Waterhead was all that separated the two sides in the under-14s showdown on Oldham Junior Cup finals day at Churchill playing fields.

The player-of-the-match kicked the only point as his team, from a division lower than opponents Oldham St Anne’s, upset the odds to claim a 1-0 win.

Stand-off Aspin slotted the ball between the posts just before the break, and Waterhead repelled attack after attack from the holders in the second half to secure the silverware, sponsored by Oldham Rugby Past Players’ Association.

Saints opened the day by securing under-12s honours with a 28-6 defeat of Saddleworth Rangers.

Player-of-the-match Ethan Chiappe kicked three goals and team-mate Max Flanagan one for Saints, while tries came from Zac Critchley (two), Ryan Wade, Jamie Sutcliffe and Alfie Barker.

Rangers replied through a Dan Bouler length-of-the-field touchdown and a Trafford Firth goal in the final supported by the Oldham Amateur League.

Matty Fletcher, of Waterhead, was chosen as the player-of-the-match in the under-13s final, as he helped his side to a 44-0 defeat of Rangers.

Playing at a level two divisions higher than their opponents, Saints were favourites to clinch under-15s honours.

And although they put 40 points on the board without reply, they were made to work hard by Rangers, who refused to give in.

The under-13 and under-15 finals were sponsored by Rugby Oldham.
