Oldham give it their all

RUGBY UNION:

OLDHAM under-16s were beaten 12-0 at home by Eccles in their latest Blacksticks group fixture.

The hosts – boosted by the recent registrations of new players Matt Taylor, Steve Allen, George Vick, Archie Taylor and Sammy Ireland – gave a good account of themselves despite the result.

Both sides worked hard to make an early breakthrough, with Oldham’s Harry Aaronson making several good breaks down the wing only to be held up by a strong Eccles backline.

Eventually Eccles pressure paid off and after 18 minutes they managed to get over the line for a try. The conversion was missed.

Not downhearted the Oldham side raised their game even further and Connor Chadderton led by example with some crunching tackles.

But after 33 minutes Eccles worked the ball well from a strong scrum and broke through to score under the posts. This time a straight-forward kick was converted.

In the second period the home side were still working hard and the game was very even.

Oldham’s Archie Taylor intercepted and broke through with a chance to run the full length of the field and score, but he was out-paced by an Eccles defender and was tackled before he could touch down.

If this amount of effort and commitment can be applied in future games the Oldham team should start to convert their play into wins.
