Battling teens fall short in play-offs

OLDHAM Rugby Union Club’s under-16s, hindered by several late cry-offs, had to settle for a place in the Bowl competition after losing 29-14 at Southport in the Blacksticks play-offs.

The hosts, after constant pressure, took an early 7-0 lead with a converted try.

Oldham responded with strong work in the centre of the pitch by Greg Antonio and Heath Fletcher, as well as some drivining runs from the backs. But the final passes did not go to hand and opportunities were missed. A penalty increased Southport’s advantage to 10 points.

Back came Oldham, with Joe Kershaw scoring under the posts, leaving a straight forward conversion for Aidan Pass.

Man-of-the-match Luke Cornforth and Antonio almost got through, but it was Southport who added to their tally before half-time with a converted try

Ali Hassan, on debut, came close to reducing the deficit after the break — Caylum Kay made the initial drive — but again Southport managed to increase their lead despite some strong defending by Sammy Ireland and George Vick.

Oldham’s heads could have dropped at this stage, but they continued to battle for everything.

Oldham’s pressure eventually paid off when Antonio stole a Southport line-out before diving in.

Pass converted and despite a late rally, Oldham had were unable to close in on the home side’s score.
