RUGBY:

FIRST together as boys, Oldham St Anne’s under-16s are now making big strides as teenagers.

The young Saints could end the season with double glory. The new North-West Counties League Premier Division campaign gets under way next month with sights firmly fixed on top honours, while they are also through to the last eight of the National Cup.

It is all a far cry from when some played as under-eights at Higginshaw Road. Seven of the current under-16s squad have been together for a decade.

Under the guidance of ex-Salford player Glenn Warhurst and former Oldham, Wigan and Castleford professional Richard Russell, the team has grown into one of the country’s leading junior sides.

Leo Casey, who delighted crowds at Oldham and Featherstone, Andy Dean and Mick Barnes are also on the coaching staff as the teens looking to add silverware to their talent.

David Charles, secretary of the junior section at St Anne’s, said: “They have really been put through their paces in training to get ready for the new season. They underperformed last year, but I believe they could go all the way this time.

“All the coaches recognise this as an all-round effort, and everyone who has pulled a green and gold jersey on for this team has contributed to their success.”
