RUGBY:

MANOR Park was the stage for the Oldham Schools’ Cup finals, with spectators enjoying plenty of tough, competitive rugby league action.

Saddleworth enjoyed the bulk of the success, winning three year finals, while Blue Coat and Royton and Crompton won one each.

The Year Seven final saw Saddleworth soar to a 24-4 victory against Crompton House.

Blue Coat won the Year Eight final, beating Saddleworth 20-18 in a hard-fought clash.

A determined Royton and Crompton team prevailed in the Year Nine showpiece as they got the better of their rivals from Failsworth.

A SUPERB individual display from scrum-half Liam Aspin helped Saddleworth to a 23-4 victory against Failsworth in the Year 10 final at Manor Park.

Aspin opened the scoring courtesy of a fine solo effort, before the powerful Ryan Dalton crashed over for Failsworth to level the scores before half-time.

Saddleworth went on to dominate the second half. Aspin scored his second try, before winger Jack Kelly extended the lead. Aspin converted both scores.

Player of the match Aspin then raced the length of the field to touch down his third try of the day, an effort he duly converted.

Aspin then popped over a late drop-goal to wrap up a fine personal tally of 19 points.

Saddleworth’s Year 11 team signed off their school rugby careers with a 38-24 final win against Newman.

Saddleworth had trailed 24-16 at one point, before a late comeback secured the silverware.
