Oldham’s golden girls

NETBALL: OLDHAM Netball Club secured multiple successes in their home tournament at Hathershaw.

Five of the home club’s teams emerged triumphant, despite strong competition.

The under-11s Owls team were in great form as they surged to victory on a perfect day. Winning all seven games, the Owls scored 104 goals and conceded only eight, with a clean sheet in five of the seven. The star player on the day was captain Helena Robinson, who scored nine goals.

Oldham’s under-12s Hawks were equally impressive as they went on to beat Chester 13-3 in the final, largely thanks to a maximum 12 goals from 12 attempts haul from Alex Martin.

The Hawks sailed through the group stage, winning all five games, scoring 71 goals and conceding 23.

Oldham’s under-13s Falcons secured the gold medals after they defeated Macclesfield Lynx 12-2 in their final clash. The hosts were unstoppable in the group stage, winning all five games and setting up a semi-final against Ribble Valley, which they won 9-3.

The final was a high-tempo affair in which Oldham again played superbly. The Falcons took the Greater Manchester County League title after edging out Tameside 41-40 in a pulsating final match.

An 11th victory in 11 games was completed largely thanks to superb efforts from joint players-of-the-match Hannah Cusack and Laura Mallinder,while Georgia Perry enjoyed a perfect shooting record of nine goals from nine attempts.

Oldham’s under-nines Owlets conceded in only one of their 10 games as they roared to tournament victory. The exceptional defensive partnership of Sarah Scott and Isabelle Jones helped the Owlets to two wins against Oldham Harriers, two against Oldham Merlins, two against Saddleworth and two against Oldham Eaglets. They also beat Bury 1-0, before losing to them 5-3 in their only defeat of the day.
