SPECIAL awards have been presented in memory of a Radclyffe School pupil and teacher who died within two days of each other.

Rashid Hussain and English teacher Charlotte Haggerty were honoured at the Chadderton secondary's annual Celebration Evening.

Popular Charlotte died of a rare form of ovarian cancer on Valentine's Day last year. She joined the Hunt Lane school as a newly-qualified teacher in 2009 and continued to work for two years after her diagnosis.

Rashid was born with a heart condition, but the Manchester United fan didn't let that stop him playing football with his brothers. The 13-year-old collapsed in his mother's lap on his brother's 16th birthday.

The Charlotte Haggerty Award for students excelling in English was presented to Sarah Nazir, 13, and Paul Jones, 14, by Charlotte's husband Lee and their young son Ollie.

Inspire

Visually impaired Alex Fox, 15, and Nayim Miah, 12, who is disabled received the Endeavour Award in memory of Rashid.

Alex is a prefect with a responsibility for helping year seven students to settle in and Nayim is making good academic progress.

Radclyffe head teacher Hardial Hayer said: "We believe that giving these two annual awards at our Celebration Evening will continue to inspire our students and leave a lasting legacy of both Charlotte and Rashid."

The Celebration Evening had separate events for young and older pupils. Each included a "carnival" performance by the school's cheerleaders, singers and a samba band.
