Hairspray show to challenge notions

BIG hairdos and big performances are promised in Waterhead Academy's production of the musical Hairspray JR.

The version of the popular film and Broadway hit, Hairspray, follows plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad who dreams of dancing on the "The Corny Collins Show".

Set in 1962 Baltimore, it deals with issues such as acceptance and civil rights and is full of laughter, dance and belting songs.

Drama teacher Stephanie Eckhardt said "Hairspray JR has an important message: that acceptance comes in all shapes, sizes, and nationalities.

"The students wanted to do this show so much, we have raised the money ourselves to run it with the kind help of local businesses and family contributions.

"Through the production the students explored ideas like civil rights and discrimination and have been working on their performance skills for months whilst making new friends and building their confidence."

The production runs at the Huddersfield Road school from December 7 to 9 at 7pm.
