Physicists from across the borough were celebrated at a special awards ceremony at Oldham Sixth Form College yesterday.

A delegation from the Ogden Trust arrived by helicopter at Oldham Hulme Grammar School yesterday to congratulate the winners of the 2015 School Physicist of the Year Awards.

Lady Catherine Ogden and members of the Ogden fellowship spent the day meeting pupils inspired to take up physics and other sciences through the trust’s educational bursaries and grants.

Special guests included Craig Testrow from Manchester University, Oldham Sixth Form College principal Jayne Clarke, Oldham and Rochdale Ogden Partnership co-ordinator Sandra Badcock and Kathryn Kirkham, curriculum area leader for science at the college.

The delegation toured the impressive facilities at the Regional Science Centre and spoke with sixth form science students before meeting local primary school pupils taking part in the Primary Engineer celebration challenge.

Oldham Sixth Form College curriculum area leader Kathryn Kirkham said: “Thanks to significant funding from the Ogden Trust, we have state-of-the-art equipment which is helping to inspire our A-level students on to great success. This year has seen a large number of our students apply to study physics at some of the country’s top universities.”

Lady Ogden presented a certificate and £25 book voucher to each of the winners of the 2015 School Physicist of the Year Awards, which covers students and teachers in 17 secondary schools in Oldham and Rochdale.

Lady Catherine Ogden said: “It was heartwarming to see the progress in this project. In the North West we have some particularly strong teachers in science and physics and strong numbers of students doing physics at Oldham Sixth Form College.”
