Youth zone celebrates mentor success

MAHDLO’S groundbreaking mentoring programme is celebrating its first anniversary by looking for new volunteeers.
The programme, launched at the Egerton Street “youth zone” in 2014, now has 45 mentors supporting young people from across Oldham.
On its anniversary, programme chiefs Nadine Cassidy and Amy Campbell brought the group together to celebrate not just the birthday, but the achievements of those taking part.
As the positive impact of the programme continues to spread, Mahdlo wants to hear from anyone who could spare a couple of hours a week to make a difference in the life of a young person.
Mahdlo is holding two open events this month and invites anyone interested in finding out more to visit for an informal chat. Volunteer mentors come from all walks of life and share a willingness to help young people with guidance and assistance.
Youngsters who want help are matched with a suitable mentor in a relationship managed by the Mahdlo team. What help is given is up to the pair.
Mentors don’t need a youth work background but simply need to offer a positive role model able to give a couple of hours a week for 12 months.
The open events are at Mahdlo on July 8 (5pm-9pm), and July 11 (1pm-5pm), or contact nadine.cassidy@mahdloyz.org.
