PUPILS from four Oldham primary schools battled it out in a competition to find the nation’s best number crunchers.

Teams of four from Knowsley Junior, Holy Rosary, St Hilda’s and Hulme Preparatory took part in the first round of the National Young Mathematicians Award.

They tackled tricky problems at Explore Learning, Union Street, to try and win a place in the semi-finals tomorrow.

The top five teams in the UK will eventually compete at the grand final of the competition which is due to be staged at Cambridge University on December 8.
