Six-goal special guest

OLDHAM Athletic’s six-goal hero Frankie Bunn was the special guest at Crompton House School’s GCSE speech night.

The former Latics striker, who now works as a coach at Huddersfield Town, holds the Football League record for the most number of goals scored in a match — putting half a dozen past Scarborough in a 7-0 Littlewoods Cup third-round thumping by Latics in the 1989-90 season.

Joe Royle’s second division Athletic side went on to reach the final of the competition that same campaign.

Big Joe’s giantkillers took huge scalps along the way, notably dumping out Arsenal and Southampton, before thrashing West Ham 6-0 in the semi-final first leg on February 14, 1990 —a match dubbed the “St Valentine’s Day massacre” which paved the way for a first Wembley appearance in their history.

A proud Latics side — which included Bunn — were eventually beaten 1-0 in the showpiece final by a Nottingham Forest outfit managed by Brian Clough.
