THE votes have been cast and the results are in for the Oldham Youth Council elections.

A total of 97 candidates stood, with 6,137 11 to 21-year-olds voting at polling stations in schools and colleges.

After two days of voting, 42 new councillors were elected to represent the borough’s six districts for two years. They will join the body’s 28 co-opted members.

Oldham Youth Council chairman T Jay Turner said: “The elections were a great success. We are really looking forward to the new term of office and I’d like to extend a warm welcome to our 42 new youth councillors.”

The youth council was launched in 2004 and meets formally every fortnight at Oldham Civic Centre with the new council getting together for the first time on April 13.
