Class of ’58... where are they now?

Date published: 30 March 2016

Two former pupils of Werneth Prep School are keen to find out what has happened to colleagues following the discovery of a photograph dating from 1958.

Greenfield’s Hazel Haigh put her head together with her brother, Howard Sutcliffe - also on the picture - to name as many fellow pupils as they could.

Hazel (62) and Howard called on the Chronicle to see if readers could fill in gaps in their memory and catch them up with how their fellow pupils had fared in life

Howard (65) who lives in Rochdale, said: “Werneth Prep School was a private school, and I think there were five classes. I don’t know the complete history, but it was owned by two of our teachers, Miss Burrows and Miss Violet, who passed it on to another teacher, Mrs Press, who then passed it on to her daughter. It is now the kindergarten for Hulme.

Two of Howard’s classmates were Paul Green, who went on to become a teacher at Royton and Crompton School, and David Flinger, who studied Spanish and taught English in Spain. All three went to Hulme Grammar School

Howard added: “We couldn’t put names to a lot of the faces, but I do remember Tony Lees, whose family owned Granelli’s ice-cream business in Oldham.

“I have completely lost touch with most people now. Where they have gone and what they are doing I just don’t know.”
