JON Kays has called time on his professional boxing career following a stunning second round defeat by Andy Townend at Sheffield United FC's Bramall Lane stadium.

Kays, now 34, had stated to the Chronicle in the run-up to the Commonwealth super-featherweight title dust-up that he was in the 'last chance saloon' as far as his career was concerned, and true to his word, he will now be stepping out of the ring for good.

Reflecting on a crushing second-round stoppage defeat at the hands of Barnsley tough guy Townend, Hurst Cross favourite Kays said: "I'm gutted because I had felt in the best shape of my whole career going into the weekend.

"I've been boxing for 24 years now and this time I really did feel in top-top shape.

"But to be fair to Townend, he was just too big and too strong for me on the night and I couldn't live with him.

"I've put everything into my boxing career and I've had some brilliant nights in the ring, but that's it for me now."

Kays enjoyed a stellar amateur career before deciding to turn professional a decade ago.

Since then, he has won 22, drawn one and now lost six in a 29-fight career in the paid ranks - a record of which '2 Smoke' should be very proud.

And the former English champion, and British title challenger, is.

"I have enjoyed every minute of my boxing career," added Kays.

"DECISION"

"But now I've made the decision to call it quits.

"It's not really sunken in yet, but I will be very proud of what I've achieved once I do sit down and really think about for a while.

"I've been in with some top fighters along the way, but Townend was just too powerful for me.

"I've no regrets about taking the fight on, though.

"Throughout my career I've taken chances when they've come my way. This was no different."

Kays now plans to take a well-earned break abroad with his wife, but he won't be quitting the boxing game altogether.

He has plans to train in the future, and will begin by getting involved with the youngsters at his home club, Boarshaw ABC.
