Stayley have it covered

RAIN played havoc with the Tanner Cup ties with five decided by bowl-outs.

The three teams which progressed by normal means in the JW Lees Brewery Pennine Cricket League knock-out competition were Moorside, Norden and Stayley.

Dave Roberts, playing against former club Uppermill, scored a vital 82 as Stayley totalled 209 all out at Leefields.

He struck eight fours and half-a-dozen sixes, before falling to overseas amateur Branden Berowsky.

Professional Ayaz Tasawwar took six for 43.

Uppermill were kept in check in the early part of their reply - they scored 11 runs off the first 11 overs - but at 108 for two, they were seemingly in control.

However, wickets tumbled and the loss of dangerman Tasawwar for 38 saw the home side's hopes of success slowly fade. The innings eventually ended 12 runs short of victory.

OVERCAME

Norden overcame Ashton by 76 runs at Wodhouse Lane, while Moorside defeated Werneth by 103 runs at Turf Pit Lane.

The cards were stacked in Werneth's favour at the half-way stage, though, after dismissing the hosts for 159.

Ali Muzaffar did the damage with five for 19, while paid man Gerrie Snyman made 44.

The visitors could not push home their advantage as Drew Fullalove claimed five for 22.

The last-16 tie between Heyside and Glodwick was determined by a bowl-out yesterday - and it was the hosts who progressed 1-0 at the 28th attempt!

Scott Bloor eventually hit the stumps for Heyside, second time around, after all 22 players had missed.

Players regathered at Little Hey Street in the hope that the ground would have dried out after Saturday's heavy rain, but it was still deemed unfit.

It was a similar story elsewhere, with bowl-out wins for Friarmere (against Oldham) and Milnrow (against Micklehurst).

Friarmere got through after Ishtiaq Hussain and Mohammed Kamran struck the stumps.

BOTHER

Bowl-outs decided both ties on Saturday.

Walsden, who lost their grip on the Wood Cup after losing to Royton, were in a spot of bother against Saddleworth.

Jack Boyle had taken three wickets and pro Imran Aslam the other as the hosts slumped to 51 for four when the rain came down.

No further play was possible, and it was Saddleworth who clinched the subsequent bowl-out.

Hollinwood also went through via cricket's version of a penalty shoot-out at Shaw.

The home side had won the toss and elected to bat, but rain arrived soon after.
