THEY did it!

Marking Oldham Golf Club's 125th anniversary and eventually raising more than £1,500 for the Make-a-Wish charity, lady captain Lynn Kershaw and former Oldham professional Andy Earlham - who is now with the Saddleworth club - played at five different local courses in one day.

The golfing marathon took place during the recent sweltering heatwave, but the conditions certainly didn't faze Lynn, who is currently in the middle of her second stint as lady captain.

"I wanted to do something a bit different, a bit more special, to mark the club's 125th anniversary," she said.

"And we managed to get through the day with no real dramas. Andy and I really enjoyed it.

"We were up at 3am and then got under way at Saddleworth at 4.40am, and though it really was very hot at Brookdale by the time the afternoon came around, we got through all five courses."

With massive help from driver and caddie at three courses Margaret Bailey - from Crompton and Royton Golf Club - Lynn and Andy played Saddleworth, Crompton and Royton, Brookdale, Werneth and Oldham.

SPECIAL HELP

There was also special help from Saddleworth's Ann Walsh and Sonia Dunn, Brookdale's Stella Cain, Werneth's Tracey Rowbotham and John Waterhouse and Graham Park from Oldham.

Lynn was particularly pleased with the overall amount raised for Make-a-Wish.

"I only put down £500 as my first figure," she said. "So to raise more than three times that was just brilliant. The support has been fantastic."

Andy said: "Lynn and I were both delighted to complete the challenge as it was a great achievement."
