Wareing makes it a title double

NIGEL WAREING picked up two matchplay titles at WERNETH during finals day.

Wareing triumphed in the The Hetherington, a four-ball knockout, alongside John Yemm as they defeated Howard Travis and Mark Abbott 1up in the final.

And he was also a victor in The Mixed when, partnered by Gail Rowbotham, they defeated father-and-daughter Clifford and Jane Fletcher 3 and 2 in the final.

There were mixed fortunes for Paul Rowbotham. He defeated James Buckley 1up in the final of the The Challenge, the singles knockout, but he and John Armstrong were beaten 1up by David Whittingham and Dave Whaley, who staged a fine fightback having lost each of the first four holes in the final of The Foursomes.

In the Mellor Cup, another singles knockout, Chris Cordwell emerged the victor after a 5 & 4 win over Paul Williams.

The September monthly medal saw Mark Wareing (72-11-61) claim top spot in the first division from former Athletic footballer Andy Barlow (70-8-62) who was second.

Les Smith (84-23-61) took the honours in the second division from Geoff Park (86-22-64).

The final midweek competition of the season, a 13-hole Stableford, produced a win for Dave Rhodes with 28 points.

Runner-up was Liam Dwayre (27pts), on the card from Ian Sutton, Dave Whaley, Mark Henshaw and Ray Fenton.

Paul Pattinson captured the Dunkerley Cup at OLDHAM after an impressive return of nett 128 in the 36-hole competition.

Pattinson had rounds of 71-8-63 and 73-8-65 to finish two shots clear of second-placed Lee Hollin whose 130 comprised two identical rounds of 71-6-65.

The second-day prize went to Sam Lunt with 73-11-62.

Incorporated into the second round was the Veterans Trophy which was won by Barry Robinson with a score of 82-17-65.

The closing invitation, a four-ball Stableford, saw Lunt and Mike Griffin emerge the victors with 45 points.

Runners-up were Norman Radcliffe snr and Paul Saxon on the card from Pete Dowd and Tony Doidge. Fourth were Barry Lewis and K Wood (40).

Steve Kenyon heads the field going into Sunday’s final round of the Mountain Ash, a 36-hole major at SADDLEWORTH.

Kenyon opened with a 81-14-67 which was the same score as runner-up Jeff Howarth (76-9-66) who was pipped on the card for top spot.

One shot behind in third place is Nick Kerin whose return was 81-13-68.

A four-ball betterball medal produced a victory for Nick Marner and Martin Heap with 63.

Second were Ray Dean and Stephen Pullen (65), on the card from Neil Bamford and Steve Dawson, Graham Hobby and Mike Keighery.

STAMFORD’S J D Schofield Cup, a major, saw Michael Toms and Alan Gledhill take top spot with a score of 10 up against the course in the four-ball betterball bogey competition.

Tony Cavanagh and James Woodcock (9up) were runners-up while third place went to Scott Troy and Herbert Ashton (8up).

Phil Brownlow returned a remarkable 73-15-58 to take the second division prize in Winter Qualifier No 1 at BROOKDALE.

Runner-up was Paul Richards (86-16-70) on the card from Paul Goulden (83-13-70). Fourth was Stuart Naismith (86-15-71).

Steve Boyle (70-6-64) headed the first division from Duncan Baird (74-9-65), Mark Riley (67-2-65) and Sam Carroll (74-8-66).

Winners of a four-ball Stableford at CROMPTON AND ROYTON were Mark Pickering and John Morson with 45 points. Second place went to Peter Boggiano and David Whitworth (44).
