BOWLS: RISING star Jonathan Copeland produced a gallant effort before going out of the Waterloo Handicap in Blackpool.
Despite being pitched against green specialist Darren Edmondson (Singleton), the 18-year-old pushed his rival all the way, eventually succumbing 21-20.
However, his Nimble Nook and Tonge team-mates Gary Ellis and Jimmy Derby reached today’s last 16 stage.
Ellis, winner for the last two years, blitzed Doncaster’s Danny Sillitoe 21-7, while Derby saw off Hyde teenager Jack Hargreaves 21-14.
SPRINGBANK’S Martin Hodson produced a superb performance to reach the semi-finals of the P P Plasma £2,010 Tonge Classic.
And he threatened to progress even further when he led Gareth Gwilliam 9-2.
However, the Greater Manchester Merit winner showed his battling qualities to register a 21-16 victory. Gwilliam was beaten 21-17 in the final by Radcliffe’s Paul Dudley.
WENDY and Sarah O’Farrell made the most of home advantage to win the Dr Kershaws pairs at Hollinwood Cricket Club.
They defeated Barbara Ashburn and Lynn Crossley 21-16 in the final.
Losing semi-finalists were Viv Blake and Christine Yarwood (Dunwood) and Maureen Collis and Linda Kay (Grapes). An excellent total of £670 was raised for Dr Kershaws.
