RUGBY: HIGGINSHAW are within touching distance of top spot in the North-West Counties League after a 10-try demolition of hosts Eccles.

The local outfit, featuring a hat-trick of scores from Jordan Hanley, strolled to an emphatic 54-0 win to move within a point of leaders Irlam Hornets.

With Nathan Jewitt and Ryan O’Donnell prominent, Higgy made a flying start.

Supporting a 30-yard break from Sean Stubbs, Hanley went in after five minutes. Jonny Fullalove converted.

Good play from Ian Sutton and Paul Turner picked out Gareth Brindley, who sent in David Sweeney for the first of his two tries. Fullalove added the extras for a 12-0 lead.

Sweeney then turned provider as his wide pass found Turner, who forced his way over the line.

There was no let-up in the second half, with Higgy attacking down the middle.

The visitors continued to press home their advantage, with Nathan Jewitt and Sweeney instigating Hanley’s hat-trick.

Fullalove, who kicked his three previous conversion attempts, found the centre of the posts again for a 46-0 lead.

Carl Fields got in on the act in the 75th minute, striding through a gap in the back line, before Ward sealed victory late on with his side’s 10th try of the afternoon

Higgy wrap up this year’s action with a visit to fourth-placed Albert Park on Saturday.
