Forwards show way for Oldham

RUGBY UNION:

OLDHAM firsts roared to a 48-15 victory over Garstang in North Lancashire Division One.

Straight from the kick-off it was evident the Oldham forwards wouldn’t be pushed around by the much bigger opposition pack.

After five minutes Jake Watson drove forward only for Garstang to go offside. Josh Brown stepped up to convert the penalty and give Oldham the lead.

And it got better soon afterwards Phil Graham crossed to make it 8-0. After 24 minutes Brown sped away and crashed over between the posts, then converted.

Garstang’s Tom Smeaton reduced the deficit and the gap was narrowed again when John Slater ran 30 metres to make it 15-10.

But Oldham restored a 10-point lead after half-an-hour through Callum Meagram.

The lead was extended before the break as Jack Taylor scored and Brown again converted, followed by Graham’s touchdown under the posts, converted to make it 34-10 at the interval.

Oldham continued to dominate in the second half and capped a good day’s work by stopping Garstang scoring a fourth try — which would have earned them a bonus point and kept them above Oldham in the table.
