Plucky Pollards

TABLE TENNIS:
POLLARDS ‘A’ never knew when they were beaten against leaders Deaf Club ‘C’ in Division Five of the Oldham and District Table Tennis League.
The match finished all-square at 5-5, after Pollards had come from behind on three occasions.
Malcolm Normanton claimed the opening set in five games before Scott Fleming doubled Deaf Club’s advantage.
David Renton pulled one back for Pollards, but Normanton won his second contest on the night for a 3-1 lead for his side.
David Murphy and Renton then levelled things up for Pollards, before Michael Briggs put the away side in front again.
Renton and Fleming exchanged points to make it 5-4, but Murphy and Renton did the business in the doubles to clinch a first draw of the season for Pollards.
In-form Owls ‘B’ recorded their third win on the bounce, defeating Uppermill ‘C’ 6-4 at home.
Uppermill’s Jim Bradbury won all three individual sets before taking the doubles with Louie Daley, but two points each for Stephen Cocker, Glen Daubney and Dinseh Gorasia meant an Owls victory was never in doubt.
In Division One, Hollinwood ‘A’ also refused to throw in the towel as they won 6-4 at Unison ‘A’.
Barry Elliott and Michael Brierley put the hosts 2-0 in front, before Gabriel Wilding and Paul King replied for Hollinwood.
An undefeated Elliott was on the mark to re-establish Unison’s lead, but three unanswered points for the visitors from Robert Belli, Wilding and King — they all stretched to five games — saw Hollinwood extend their unbeaten run to four matches.
Werneth ‘A’, with Stuart Meredith bagging his fourth maximum of the campaign, completed the double over Honeywell ‘B’ courtesy of an 8-2 win.
