Chunky chub helps Dawson to victory

AnglinG: JEFF Dawson took first place in the Saddleworth and District Angling Society members-only match on the Ward Lane length of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

A 3lb chub was his feature fish with smaller samples taken on the pole and red maggot adding up to 5lb 6oz.

Lee Birchenough was second with a 5lb 2oz catch, helped by three late skimmers netted in the last 10 minutes on pole and maggot.


A TOTAL of 35lb 4oz of carp taken shallow on pellet gave Dave Timmins a win in the latest Oldham Central AC match on Cudmore’s Suez canal, with fish averaging around the 4lb mark.
Second on the day was Mick McDonald with his 32lb 12oz net of carp also falling to pellet fished tight across.


CHRIS Butterworth was first in the Diggle AC Tuesday evening match on Tanners Dam with seven carp and a few skimmers tipping the scales to 27lb 2oz.
Winner of the previous two matches, Dave Machin (Fibrecare), had to settle for second with two carp and 16lb of silvers adding up to 20lb 6oz. Darren Webb was third with one carp and 16lb of silvers for 20lb 4oz.


PETE Molloy was the winner of the Monarch AC Sunday members’ match on the club water, with the pole and sweetcorn accounting for 26lb 4oz and despite rumours that he threw a 13lb carp back in!
Mick Diskin was second with maggot tempting 21lb 8oz of ide, roach and skimmers.


MONARCH AC’s Thursday evening match on the club water saw Dave Ireland jump two places to win with a fantastic weight of 28lb 10oz of ide, skimmers and chub taken on chopped worm and caster.
Ian Ditchfield was second as his maggot bait tempted 14lb 10oz of skimmers, ide and roach.


SATURDAY’S Medlock Bridge AC open match on the park lake saw the top three all register double-figure weights.
Mark Webb filled first place with 14lb 3oz of chub to 1lb taken on the pole and maggot, adding two good skimmers that might have just been the difference as Bob Harrison took second with 11lb 15oz of chub and skimmers that fell to maggot.



MONDAY’S Medlock Bridge AC open match on the park lake was won by Martin Taylor (Trabucco Halifax). A good last hour swung things his way as pellet fished at 11 metres netted him 16lb 13oz of skimmers, roach and chub.
Fred Prudham concentrated on his trusted maggot approach, netting second with a mainly chub net that weighed 15lb 6oz.



THE TRI-CAST Highfield squad are flying, with numerous placings and wins.
One of the waters where they have been successful is Sycamore Fishery where in Saturday’s match, James Cantello managed a third place with maggot and caster fished at five and 11 metres really getting among the water’s ide population. He finished with 21lb 12oz.

Sunday’s open match on the same fishery was won by Paul Mossman with 4mm pellets fished at 12 and 13 metres tempting 19lb 12oz of carp.

Ogden Reservoir – Day tickets on the bank and at Tight lines Shaw. Still fishing really well with brilliant sport off bream and pike. Surprise fish being caught are trout to 6lb. Best area is the houses upwards towards the shallows.

Strinesdale Reservoir – Day tickets on the bank. Warmer weather has switched the fish on with plenty of roach and skimmers feeding. Some big perch and tench in here too.

Cargate pool – Medlock Bridge AC members-only water.

Rochdale canal – Fishing well with squatt and bread punch tempting plenty of roach and skimmers. Tench also falling to chopped worm and caster.

Bardsley canal – Day tickets on the bank.

Alexandra Park lake – Day tickets on the bank. Skimmers and chub making up most weights with pellet and maggot the best baits.

Hollingworth lake – Swimfeeder, worm and red maggot for plenty of skimmers and bream. If bites slow change feeder to a bomb and you should start catching again.

Tanners dam – Diggle AC members only. Fishing really well at present with lots of silvers feeding as well as some decent sized carp. Double figures needed to frame.
