RICHARD Hughes produced a couple of miraculous shots on his way to victory in the Oldham and District Centenary Trophy at Oldham.

The popular five-handicapper from Saddleworth eagled the par-four ninth when his second shot, with a pitching wedge, went into the hole.

And in trouble on the 12th, he chipped in from the back of the green to register a par four which kept his round on track.

He needed a birdie four on the final hole to earn a card play-off with a round of 68, nett 63 - and came out on top, beating runner-up Pete Dunbar of the host club and his Saddleworth club-mate, Stuart Hanson.

The golfing gods clearly shone on 63-year-old Hughes, who described his victory as “a pleasant surprise.”

Hughes is a past winner of the Oldham Chronicle Cup and the Royton Sword, and is a multiple winner of the Saddleworth Championship.

OLDHAM’S Jane Antrobus and Beverley Scholes completed a memorable hat-trick by winning the Manchester and District Past-Captains’ tournament at Dukinfield Golf Club.

It proved to be a local shoot-out in this year’s final, Jane and Beverley taking on the winners of the heat held in June, Werneth's Patricia Grant and Sheila Waterhouse.

Held at the home club of this year’s Captain of Captains, Sally Lester, the final was a tight foursomes battle with the Oldham pair coming out on the top.

Said Jane: “This event has really showcased two small clubs from the Oldham area. Beverley and myself are absolutely over the moon at completing the hat-trick!”
