TWO familiar faces from Oldham’s rugby league fraternity have been acclaimed for their dedication.

Allan Booth of Waterhead and Hollinwood’s Anita Halliwell were honoured at the annual BARLA awards evening at the Cedar Court Hotel, Ainley Top.

In celebrating its 40th anniversary, BARLA presented special awards to figures who have served the sport at amateur level.

For recipient Allan (69), the prize was for unstinting service to Waterhead.

The club president helps out on match days with various jobs — including strapping up the players before they go out on the field.

Nominated by the Oldham Amateur League Allan, who lives a 15-minute walk from the Peach Road ground, said: “It came as a complete surprise and means a lot to me.

“I try to do attend as many home games as I can and also go away when possible. I do it because I enjoy it.”

Anita, who has shown unflinching commitment to the Hollinwood cause, was handed BARLA life membership.

From running the touchline on a Saturday afternoon in all weathers, to making cups of tea for spectators, she has been a constant presence at the club for 30 years.

“She really cares about amateur rugby league and that’s why she puts in the hours she does,” said husband Fred, another club veteran.

Saddleworth Rangers made it a treble for the town on the night by scooping the media award.

The Shaw Hall Bank Road club is promoted through the club website, Twitter feeds and a Facebook page as well as with a monthly newsletter for supporters.
