RUGBY: AT the third time of asking, Waterhead enjoyed the sweet smell of success in the Kingstone Press National Conference League Division Two.
Chris Hough’s side beat Askam 15-0 at home. And it was the coach who clinched victory following two heavy defeats, with a try just after the hour.
He said: “It was a really hard-fought win. Our defence was superb. Askam had sets of six on our line, but we held firm. That was in contrast to the previous week when, to be frank, our defending was awful.
“Askam came here high on confidence after putting 40 points on the board against Pilkington Recs, so to ‘nil’ them was a good effort on our part.”
SADDLEWORTH Rangers produced a strong second-half display as they continued their unbeaten start to the season in NCL Division One.
At home to Shaw Cross Sharks, they ran in 14 unanswered second-half points in a 26-18 victory.
Rangers’ latest victory represents the fourth straight league game in which the club has registered 26 points. The sequence dates back to the final game of last term, at home to Milford Marlins.
THE Standard Cup semi-final between Oldham St Anne’s and Waterhead will take place on Sunday, March 30, at Higginshaw Road (11.30am kick-off).
