RUGBY UNION:

OLDHAM prevailed 21-15 at Garstang in what turned out to be a tough encounter against well-drilled opponents.

Oldham’s pack was magnificent all afternoon but it looked like the first half would remain a pointless stalemate until Gareth Barber made a great break and put in a fantastic crossfield kick, collected by Phil Conroy who raced in for an unconverted try.

Oldham were quickest away in the second half when Callum Megram slotted over a penalty for offside.

But Garstang came back to score after 46 minutes as Oldham eased off.

Just before the hour mark second row Chris McKenzie started a move which was carried on by Barber who kicked out to the wing where McEwan collected and dived over the line to make it 13-5.

Oldham had prop Tom Hannon sin-binned and while he was away Garstang managed a converted try, closely followed by Nick Hackman being binned and Garstang taking a 15-13 lead, via a penalty.

Oldham showed tenacity to fight their way back and retake the lead via a penalty kick of their own, however, converted by McEwan.

Oldham then finished off the scoring when Stuart Brennan dived over.
