GOLF:

SADDLEWORTH captain Andy Dunster is keen to cultivate a healthy club spirit in 2014.

Like other golf clubs, Saddleworth are fighting to maintain membership levels.

“There are more people playing golf than ever before, but many are just not joining clubs,” said Andy.

“I would like to promote a better club spirit and show that there is more to being a member of a club than just playing golf.”

With that in mind, 52-year-old Andy – a Saddleworth member for 32 years – has already organised a skiing trip to the Pyrenees which was attended by seven couples from the club.

”There was a good cross-section and it was brilliant,” said Andy.

Another innovation masterminded by the captain is a “top dogs” pre-season event: “The teams who compete in various leagues hardly see each other, so I decided to get them all together before they started their matches and it has been a big success,” he said.

Also new for 2014 will be a summer ball and War of the Roses day which will feature players from either side of the Lancashire/Yorkshire border.

And there will be various events to raise money for Andy’s chosen charity, the Benjamin Maly Cardiac Fund.

Andy, who is married to Karen and is father to Tom (25) and Holly (23), has always been a keen sportsman. He plays golf off a handicap of 10, but was a member of Saddleworth Rangers amateur rugby league club from being a youngster to quitting the game when he turned 30.

He was also an accomplished batsman and played cricket for the Oldham town team as a teenager.

Andy hails from Greenfield, but has lived in Uppermill for three and a years. He is the managing director of Medlock FRB, whic builds and equips public houses.
