Brierley’s brace

Angling: THE first of the Medlock Bridge AC Saturday Open matches on the Park Lake was won by another in-form angler, Billy Brierley, with his waggler and maggot fished three rods out tempting 9lb 1oz of hybrids and small roach up to four ounces.

Brierley added the odd fish on the ole, but was well in front of Paul Hill’s 5lb 5oz catch. Hill included a last-hour tench weighing two pounds and some small roach and chub which fell to maggot at 13 metres.

Brierley then made it two wins in two days as he topped the Bradshaw Sunday Open match with 77lb of f1s taken on the pole and pellet, beating Dave Marshall into second with 72lb.

OLDHAM Central AC enjoyed a cracking match on Hampton Springs, where on Willows Lake, all competitors bagged plenty of fish.
Best on the day was Bernard Lees, with his 32lb net made up of carp in the five to six pound-bracket on meat and corn in the margins. Jim Wiseman was second with his corn down the nearside margins accounting for 25lb 12oz of carp and skimmers. The next match is on Cudmore Fishery (Suez Canal).

DARREN Mulheir took first place in the Old Hough Farm Saturday Open match with his fancied corner peg produced 53lb 8oz of carp and f1s. Ken Potts drew another corner peg and managed a second-placed 42lb 15oz catch of carp.
Tri-Cast Highfield made it a one-two in the Middlewich teams of four Spring League on the Trent and Mersey Canal, with James Cantello winning the match with a brilliant 13lb 7oz 12drams of gudgeon.

That beat team-mate Shaun Paddon into second place with an almost identical 12lb 2oz of gudgeon.

DANNY Keegan took first place and the £100 bonus peg money in the latest of the Todmorden AS members-only matches on Townhouse Fishery.

Pole and pellet worked well for 44lb 14oz of carp, beating Chris Oliver’s 38lb 3oz of carp also taken on pole and pellet into second.

MICK Diskin topped last week’s Twingates OAP match on the club water with a superb 19lb 4oz, followed by Dave Wolstenholme (18lb 4oz).

I ENJOYED a great day’s fishing in the Mirfield AC 74-peg Sunday Open match on the Huddersfield Broad Canal, winning the event.

I was drawn on the University length, and on arrival found strong winds were funnelling between the buildings. Fishing the pole at anything more than six metres was almost impossible.

I decided on a top-three plus two section approach, with a small cup of liquidised bread fed at the start and a 4mm punch on a 20s green Kamakatsu hook under a 4x12 home-made float.

Bites came from the off with roach to four ounces, though the majority of fish were in the half to one ounce bracket.

A few perch on chopped worm fished right down my peg and a lucky two-pound pike taken on single caster made up my weight of 8lb 1oz and a £170 pick-up.

Keith Henigan was second with several pike taken on worm making up his 6lb weight.
