Werneth seek a tonic

CRICKET: IT may not be the 150th anniversary season they would have envisaged, but all is not yet lost for Werneth.

Matt Taylor’s men go into what is now Sunday’s home match (originally scheduled for tomorrow) against Walsden without a win in the Premier Division this season.

But Clifton are below them in the table and Werneth know that a couple of victories could lift them to a position with a chance of survival in the top flight.

There are signs of hope for the Coppice club. Ali Muzaffer continues to make runs and is flying high in the division’s amateur batting averages. Following a recent century, paid man Mohammed Zaman Khan is back in form and threatening to emulate last season’s heroics.

If the rest can back up these two key players, victory over second-placed Walsden can be achieved.

Royton are immediately above Werneth in the league and face a tough trip to Littleborough tomorrow, a dress rehearsal for next weekend’s Wood Cup quarter-final at the Paddock.

Championship action on Sunday also features Crompton, who go to leaders Monton and Weaste as Oldham travel to Radcliffe.
