Werneth see a chink of light

BOOSTED by successive victories at Heywood and at home to Rochdale, Werneth have genuine belief that they can escape relegation from the CLL’s Premier Division.

Having waited 12 matches to break the duck, Werneth will be going for a hat-trick of victories when they take on Littleborough at the Coppice on Saturday.

And a match which once might have filled them with apprehension suddenly looks winnable.

It’s all down to the confidence gained from those two recent wins.

Although Werneth remain bottom, 10 points adrift of Clifton and 15 behind Royton and Rochdale, a continuation of their current form could soon see them close the gap.

And skipper Matthew Taylor is confident his team can do just that.

He said: “We stuck together through the hard times and the win at Heywood gave us great belief.

“We have continued to work hard and there is enough talent here to keep the momentum going.

“We have Littleborough this weekend, and then we have a massive weekend with matches against Clifton and Royton.”

Taylor, who is happy with his improved bowling form, says the imminent return of key all rounder Joe Taylor gives further cause for optimism.

Catches have started to stick, he said, and the types of matches Werneth had been losing have begun to go their way.

And further confidence was gained from the team’s victory over Moorside in the annual challenge match for the Trevor Bland Memorial Trophy.

“It was the same team which beat Rochdale the day before and that is important for our confidence and belief,” he said.
