Double blow for Werneth

WERNETH suffered double despair as both their Oldham and District League sides lost Cup semi-finals.
Their ‘A’ team were well beaten 4.5-0.5 by neighbours Brookdale at neutral venue Ashton.
But their ‘B’ team went down to the last putt on the last green in the final match when Fairfield’s Paul Robson rolled in a 10-footer in the gathering gloom to clinch the 3-2 victory at Denton.
Fairfield’s opponents in the ‘B’ Cup will be Blackley after they overcame Denton 4-1 at Fairfield, but it was much closer than the scoreline suggests with only a single comprehensive 6&5 win.
Two others were won on the last green negating the need for two halved games to go down extra holes.
And while there is nothing to separate Dukinfield and Ashton ‘A’ teams in their chase for a league play-off place, that was certainly not the case in the ‘A’ Cup at Blackley.
Dukinfield pulled off a decisive 3-0 win with all three games won by the 16th and Gaz Beresford’s pairings up in the other two games that were called in as dead rubbers.
