OLDHAM College have formed a new partnership with Manchester Giants.

The agreement will see the Giants run a basketball academy at the College, ensuring students benefit from top-level coaching while getting an insight into the club and professional progression routes.

The exciting collaboration cements the College’s high standing in sports and the sports on offer for the Oldham community.

Oldham College’s principal and chief executive Alun Francis said: “The partnership with Manchester Giants in setting up the basketball academy is great news for Oldham.

“Working with employers and proposed partners, means that our students get the opportunity to understand the industry as a whole and it also helps by benefiting the community.”

Manchester Giants director Graham Herstell said: “We are really excited about what our new partnership with Oldham College can achieve.

“The academy will give the students a platform to make the most of their basketball talents and provides a great opportunity for them to fulfil their potential and to become the best they can be.

“We believe that the Giants and the College together can set in place a valuable stage on the pathway for great things for aspiring young players.”

Phase one will start in September. It will provide opportunities for work experience at the Giants, coaching and student visits to games.

The basketball academy, aimed at 16-19-year-olds, will launch at Oldham College in September, 2015, and be all encompassing to help students reach the BTEC level three extended diploma in sport.
