Sneyd stars for Saints

CARL Sneyd was the scoring hero for Oldham St Anne’s as they brushed aside the challenge of Askam to record a 42-18 victory in Division Two of the Kingstone Press National Conference League.

Ace Sneyd, the ex-Waterhead player whose brother Marc is currently starring in Super League for high-flyers Castleford, scored four tries and kicked five goals on a baking-hot afternoon at Higginshaw Road.

And that individual effort helped Mick Fogerty’s side record back-to-back wins, lifting the club into the top half of the table.

Sneyd touched down for the first time in the 13th minute after a Carl Fields break and was in again after linking well with Lee Forsythe and man-of-the-match Adam Walker.

Two conversions followed before Tommy Hopkins pulled one back, Kristian Tyson converting.

Saints’ open style brought reward with a try from Kiel Lancashire after a strong Dave Harris break and Sneyd went on to complete his hat-trick, taking the score on to 22-6.

Owen Wilkinson’s try and Tyson’s goal pulled one back before the interval and after Niall Collins’ effort for Saints had been answered by heavy Askam pressure, Lancashire lifted the lid with an 80-yard run and score.

With 20 minutes left, Mark Tyson jinked his way over and Tyson converted, but St Anne’s continued to pile on the pressure with Sneyd going over for his fourth and Harris finishing off a good afternoon’s work.

Sneyd’s personal tally added up to 26 points and Saint can now enjoy a week off, before testing themselves in a derby clash at Waterhead.
