Top marks for Abbott

Date published: 30 July 2014

WERNETH golfer Mark Abbott had an amazing week.

First he shot his lowest-ever score around the Garden Suburb course — a six-under-par 62 which was only one-shot off the course record — as he won the midweek Stableford with 43 points and reduced his handicap to an all-time low of 0.9.

Abott (pictured) followed that up with rounds of 67 and 68 to claim his first best gross prize in the Captain’s Day major at the club.

But the following day, Abbott’s amazing run of form could not save Werneth’s mixed team from a 4-3 extra-hole defeat at Dunscar (Bolton).

Partnering Gail Rowbotham, he came from four holes down with five to play, only to lose the deciding match on the 19th.

“It has been quite a week — I even crashed my car on the way home from shooting a fantastic 76 around Lytham St Anne’s on Thursday,” said the popular Werneth member.

Seventeen handicapper Gary Riley was the toast of the club after a second-round nett 61 saw him clinch the Captain’s Day 36-hole prize with a 129 total.
